The biblical apocrypha refers to a collection of ancient apocryphal books that can be found in some editions of Christian Bibles. They are typically placed in a separate section between the Old and New Testaments or as an appendix after the New Testament. Certain Christian Churches may also include some or all of these texts within the body of their version of the Old Testament.
The term "apocryphal" has been in use since the 5th century, but it was in Luther's Bible of 1534 that the Apocrypha was first published as a distinct intertestamental section. To this day, the Apocrypha is included in the lectionaries of Anglican and Lutheran Churches. The Revised Common Lectionary, used by most mainline Protestants, including Methodists and Moravians, also incorporates readings from the Apocrypha in its liturgical calendar, although alternate Old Testament scripture lessons are provided.
In the preface to the Apocrypha in the Geneva Bible, it was explained that while these books were not considered to be part of the commonly agreed upon scriptures read and expounded publicly in the Church, they were still accepted as valuable resources for historical knowledge and instruction on godly manners. However, during the English Civil War, the Westminster Confession of 1647 excluded the Apocrypha from the canon and did not elevate it above other human writings. The British and Foreign Bible Society also chose not to print it in the early 19th century. However, there has been a resurgence in popularity of English Bibles with the Apocrypha in recent times, and they are often published as intertestamental books.
In Protestant versions of the Apocrypha, which were first recognized as such in Luther's Bible (1534), there are seven books considered canonical Old Testament books by the Catholic Church. These books were affirmed by the Council of Rome in AD 382 and later reaffirmed by the Council of Trent. They are also considered canonical by the Eastern Orthodox Church, referred to as anagignoskomena per the Synod of Jerusalem.
The Anglican Communion accepts the Apocrypha for instruction in life and manners, but not for the establishment of doctrine, as stated in Article VI of the Thirty-Nine Articles. Many lectionary readings in The Book of Common Prayer are taken from the Apocrypha, and these lessons are read in the same way as those from the Old Testament. The first Methodist liturgical book, The Sunday Service of the Methodists, includes verses from the Apocrypha, especially in the Eucharistic liturgy.
It is worth noting that the Protestant Apocrypha contains three books (1 Esdras, 2 Esdras, and the Prayer of Manasseh) that are accepted as canonical by many Eastern Orthodox Churches and Oriental Orthodox Churches but considered non-canonical by the Catholic Church. Therefore, these three books are not included in modern Catholic Bibles.
